Arrogance and Egotism are Two Dispraised Characteristics and humbleness and Serving Muslims Are Two Praised Merits
Praise be to Allah and may Allah increase the honor and raise the rank of our Master Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Know dear Muslims that arrogance is a dispraised manner. Allah ta^ala has prohibited us from being arrogant in many verses of the honorable Qur'an, the Messenger of Allah explained the meaning of arrogance and its consequences in many hadiths.
Arrogance is also the cause of many problems which face many people in
their daily life in addition to the torture it brings in the
hereafter.
Arrogance was defined in the hadith of the Prophet sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam:
It means: “Arrogance is rejecting the truth and looking down on others.” (Related by Muslim.)What is understood from this hadith
is that arrogance is rejecting the truth that is being said by someone
who is young, poor, or not famous; while the one who was called for
the truth is famous. Looking down on people is like being arrogant with
a poor person, because he is poor. Thus, the arrogant person refuses
to speak with him or talks to him in a haughty way.
It was also reported that the Prophet said in the hadith that was realted by al-Bukhariyy and Muslim:"ألا أُخبركم بأهل النار كلُّ عُتُلٍّ جَوَّاظٍ مستكبر"The Prophet sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam tells us in this hadith
that among the people of Hellfire is every distasteful, rude
individual who has greed for money and has great eagerness to get it.
He also mentioned those who refrain from paying the money that Allah has made it obligatory upon them to pay without excuse, like the due zakah.
Arrogance is among the sins of the heart, the sins of the heart are
many. The judgment of the believer who dies without repenting from this
disease is that he will either be tortured or forgiven according to
the Will of Allah; however, if he will be tortured; he shall not stay in Hellfire forever. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam said:
It means: “The one who has in his heart arrogance that weighs as much as a speck of dust will not be among the first ones to enter Paradise.” (Related by Ahmad). This hadith
means that the believer who dies while having in his heart as much as a
speck of dust of arrogance will not enter Paradise with the first ones
without prior torture, he will be tortured in Hellfire and will be
admitted afterwards to Paradise, which has the everlasting endowment.
(The speck of dust is that fine dust which is seen through the light of the sun when it enters through the window).
Among the bad consequences and the ugliness of arrogance is what the Prophet sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam mentioned about a man that while he was walking arrogantly with a proud gait while dressing burd, Allah
made the earth cave in underneath him; the Prophet mentioned that this
man is sinking inside the earth until the Day of Judgment. Look at
how this man was punished for his arrogance. So, if you have any kind
of arrogance, then take that out of your heart and repent to Allah
from that and all other things that bring torture in the hereafter,
for it is a killing and destructive poison. Do that before the angel of
death comes and takes away your soul and before you are taken to that
hole where only your deeds will be with you. It was narrated that Mutraf the son of ^Abdullah
the son of ash-Shakhyr saw al-Mahllab walking with a proud gait while
dressing a long silk gown, he said to him: O slave of Allah, this walk in not liked by Allah
and by His Messenger. Al-Mahllab said to him: Don’t you know me? He
said: Yes I know you. You were at first nothing; you will end up a dirty
corpse; and between this and that you are carrying feces in your
body.Al-Mahllab then walked away and stopped walking like that.
It was mentioned about the torture of the arrogant
people that they will be assembled on the Day of the Judgment as the
small red ants with the image of men, people would step on them; yet
they shall not die after they had died in this world.
Know O son of Adam that the arrogant people are many types: Some of them are arrogant to Allah ta^ala, their arrogance led them to commit blasphemy as what happened to Numrud, who claimed Godhood and blasphemed in Allah, Allah had him killed by a creature among His weakest creations; the mosquito. The arrogance of Pharaoh and Haman blocked them from believing in Allah as their Lord and in Musa (Moses) as a Messenger.
The damned Pharaoh was arrogant to Allah and to Musa and stuck to his blasphemy. It was narrated that he consulted his minister Haman about believing in Musa, Haman
said to Him: While you are a lord who is worshipped (as he claimed),
you will be a slave who is worshipping. So he kept on being a misguided
blasphemer we seek refuge with Allah from that. The arrogance of the blasphemers of Quraysh made them reject the Qur’an and the Call of Prophet Muhammad sallallahu
^alayhi wa sallam when they knew that he came with the truth. They
opposed him because they were afraid that people would say about them
that they left the religion of their fathers while they were masters and
followed the Prophet who did not use read and write with the claim
that his followers were weak and poor.
The arrogance of Iblis (the devil) led him to commit blasphemy. His arrogance and envy towards Prophet Adam were the reason for his everlasting loss. Allah said in the Qur’an about Iblis:
This verse states that Iblis said that he was created from fire and that Adam was created from clay, he refused to prostrate for him and thus blasphemed by objecting to the order of Allah.
Among other types of arrogance is to be pompous
about the money that one has as the kings do with their safes, and
among the tradesmen in their trading, and among the rich tradesmen who
own properties. Some people would brag about the beauty of their
clothing too, their horses, and the things they use for riding. So the
rich and wealthy would degrade the poor and they would say to him: “You
work hard and still you are a needy person; if I wanted I could buy
someone like you; I could hire someone who is higher in status than
you; how much are your worth? My furniture is worth more than all of
your money combined; I spend in one day more than what you spend in one
year.
Another Type of Arrogance is for someone to be
pompous about his power and overwhelming force against the weak people,
and to brag about his clan; off-springs; relatives, slaves, and
supporters.
Imam Muslim related that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam said:
It means, “The one who falls short in his deeds, his lineage will not make up for what he has fallen short of.”
It means what’s really relevant is one’s deeds and not his descendant
and lineage. Some people brag and gloat about their lineage and
descend, they look upon others as if they are just money and slaves,
they would never mix with them or sit with them. One of them would brag
with his tongue saying: I am the son of so and so; you and those like
you have no business in talking with me; or even look at me; how dare
you speak to people of my status.
Among other types of arrogance too is to be pompously conceited about the beauty that one has. This would lead him to gossip, diminution,
and to speak openly about the defects of others. Such a person who is
pompous about his beauty is inattentive to the fact that he will become
soil in his grave, and that his beauty is like Khadra’ad-Dumn
and the color of the flowers in the desert; while it had beauty;
suddenly the wind blew them up and made them broken apart. *Khadra’ad-Dumn is
a green plant which grows on the garbage wastes; the Prophet described
it that it is green; however, it grows on the garbage wastes. How
many beautiful individuals, had their beauty eliminated with death,
transformed in the grave to a black coal and their bodies were charred
having an odor stinkier than that of a bad smelling corpse?
Allah ta^ala has urged us to be humble and modest to our fellow brothers, the Master of the humble ones Muhammad sallallahu
^alayhi wa sallam taught us through his doings and his sayings how to
be humble to our fellow brothers and to treat them with softness and
gentleness for the sake of Allah.
So be humble and kind to your brothers, attend to their needs, serve
them, and obey them in all what is good. For the Muslim is like the
camel that is chained in the nose, it is usually easy to be lead even
by a young boy. So the believer obeys his brothers whether young or
older in what is accepted by Allah.
It was narrated in what urges us
on being attached to serving Muslims that one day people were hit with
drought and people entered the mosque praying the Prayer of Istisqa’ (asking Allah
to make the rain come down). In the mosque, there was a righteous man
who was watching people performing prayer. He saw a man with a weak
body praying in one of the corners of the mosque, the minute he raised
his hand supplicating Allah, the rain came down.
The righteous man then followed that man and walked behind him, that
man entered a store where they sell slaves, he followed him and asked
the storeowner about a slave whom he can buy. He showed him the slaves
he has one after another, he said: This is not what I want; the
storeowner said to him: I ran out of them, this is all what I have; the
righteous man said to him: But I have just seen a person entering the
store and his description is this and that. The storeowner then said:
That one, I will not sell him; Allah
has blessed my trading since I bought him. He insisted on buying him
until he sold him that slave. When he took him and walked with him, the
slave said to him: Why did you buy me? For I’m weak and I cannot serve
you, my body does not help me. The righteous man said to him: I bought
you just to serve you, the righteous slave then raised his hands and
said: O Allah the
secret you have given me (his status) has been uncovered, so make me
die on a good condition; as soon as he finished he supplication; he
passed away may Allah raise his rank.Yes, that man knew the status of that slave person and he bought him just to serve him for the sake of Allah.
Serving the Muslims encourages you and makes you
used on joining those who are working in the field of the Islamic Call
Da^wah according to what you can deliver in terms of time and
skills. Serving the Muslims teaches modesty for the sake of Allah,
teaches humbleness and obeying one another in all what is good. Serving
the Muslims brings mutual love, friendship amongst you; as well as it
makes you compassionate to one another. Serving the Muslims would earn
you reward, which would benefit you in the hereafter.
Serving Muslims makes you get rid of laziness and many
sicknesses. Serving Muslims, helps you to ponder about saying: Who am
I?Who am I compared to the highest ranking pious people? Who am I
compared to those who were renowned for their humbleness like Master Ahmad ar-Rifa^iyy. He, may Allah
raise his rank used to lead the blind people and was a good example for
humility. One day a non Muslim lost one of his cows, he searched for
it for three days looking around until he got fatigued, exhausted, and
hungry; he threw himself in the hub of our Master Ahmad. That hub was very wide for the guest. Our Master Ahmad came to his hub, Allah
inspired him, he said to him: O you, I see that you are not from this
area and that you are tired. He brought him wheat and water to bake his
own bread, because this type of blasphemers due to their extreme
hatred to Muslims do not eat the bread which has been baked by a
Muslim, he said to him: Knead this wheat, then bake it; he then
prepared for him the baking tool. After that man finished eating and
rested, our Master Ahmad delegated someone to take him to his ship so that he can go back to his town – The river of Dijlah (Tigris) –.
That blasphemer reached his family’s place, they asked him: How did
you spend your time while you were away from us? He told them about our
Master Ahmad ar-Rifa^iyy, he then said: This is the True Religion, he embraced Islam, his family did too, as other blasphemers did.He, may Allah raise his rank, was renowned for his great compassion towards the creatures of Allah ta^ala; may Allah
endows a wide mercy on him, and grant us his supports, and reward him
for the good things he did to Muslims. Work hard, perform the
obligations, avoid the prohibitions, and do lots of the optional (nafl)
deeds. Serve Muslims a lot and do not say: I am not among the perfect
ones, and you just sit down and leave out serving your fellow
brothers. Be a servant to your Muslim brothers, work onlessening their agonies.
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
«لا تَحقِرَنَّ مِنَ المعرُوفِ شيئًا ولو أن تلقى أخَاكَ بوجهٍ طَلِقٍ»
It means: “don’t degrade any y deed such as to approach your brother with a smiley face.”
The rightly guided caliphs give us good and bright examples about
humbleness, being modest towards others, and about serving the poor and
the needy. Our Master ^Umar Ibn al-Khattab was one day going to the Friday Prayer when he was a caliph, he was wearing a dress which is recommended to be worn on Friday.
On his way to the mosque water came down on him from a spout which belongs to al-^Abbas may Allah raise his rank, the uncle of the Messenger of Allah. Al-^Abbas
had two chicks slaughtered for him on the roof and they poured water
on them, that water came down on our Master ^Umar. He went back home
and changed his clothes and ordered that the sprout, which made the
water came down on him, be removed; so it was removed.
Al-^Abbas said: “The Messenger of Allah
is the one who place this spout.” ^Umar said: “Then it will be placed
again in its spot.” Our Master ^Umar then came to al-^Abbas and said: “Ride on my shoulder and place it.” He insisted that he does that although he was the Amir of the Believers. He lowered his body, al-^Abbas
rode on his shoulder and placed the sprout back where it was. All of
the high ranking Companions were humble; however, some of the Companions
who embraced Islam after the Opening of Makkah did not have that trait, which the high ranking Companions had; that is why the Messenger of Allah sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam addressed them saying:
"إنكم لتغفلون عن أفضل العبادة التواضع" It means: “You are inattentive of one of the best good deeds, which is humbleness.” This
means that humbleness is among the best good-deeds and does not mean
that the absolute best good-deed is humility, because the best good-deed
is to believe in Allah and His Messenger sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam.
Dear Muslims make your selves used to humbleness and to accept the
truth no matter where it came from, and beware of being arrogant; for
arrogance is a corrupt disease and the one who is arrogant is a
prisoner of his own desires. We ask Allah to make us among those who follow our Master Muhammad sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam, his kind Companions and those who followed them.
O Allah, grant us humbleness and obeying our fellow Muslim brothers in all what is good. O Allah facilitate for us to work on serving Muslims.

blasphemer we seek refuge with Allah from that.
قَالَأَنَاْ خَيْرٌ مِّنْهُ خَلَقْتَنِي مِن نَّارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُ مِنطِينٍ

"من بَطّأ بهعمله لم يسرع به نسبه"

Such a person who is
pompous about his beauty is inattentive to the fact that he will become
soil in his grave, and that his beauty is like Khadra’ad-Dumn
and the color of the flowers in the desert; while it had beauty;
suddenly the wind blew them up and made them broken apart.
